Formulation Overview
& Educational References
SilkTears™ is an over-the-counter lubricating eye drop that meets FDA OTC monograph requirements for ocular lubricants and is intended for the temporary relief of dryness and irritation. Its preservative-free formulation uses a silk-derived protein as an inactive wetting agent excipient.
About the external research below: these publications discuss silk-derived materials in general, including preclinical and clinical research settings. They do not evaluate SilkTears™, and their findings should not be interpreted as claims about SilkTears™’ performance or as treatment claims. SilkTears™’ only intended use is the temporary relief of dryness and irritation as permitted under the OTC monograph for ophthalmic lubricants.

What’s Inside:
Our Carefully Selected Ingredients
SilkTears™ is formulated under the FDA’s OTC Monograph M018 for ophthalmic lubricants, using only permitted ingredients — with nothing unnecessary, nothing harsh.
Every component in SilkTears™ is selected with intention: to meet strict FDA requirements for over-the-counter eye drops, to align with modern patient expectations for clean, minimalist formulations, and to support safe, gentle use — even on the most sensitive eyes.
- No synthetic preservatives.
- No PEGs.
- No parabens.
- No surfactants.
- No ingredients you can’t pronounce.
Just thoughtful formulation, guided by science and built for today’s dry eye patient.
Active Ingredient
Glycerin (0.2%) – The only FDA-listed active ingredient in our formula. Glycerin is a widely used ophthalmic lubricant derived from vegetable and fruit oils. It forms a temporary, soothing layer over the eye surface to relieve dryness and irritation.
Inactive Ingredients
Purified Water – A sterile, high-purity base for the formulation. Water is essential to achieving isotonic balance and overall drop tolerability.
Silk-Derived Protein-4 (SDP-4) – A highly water-soluble silk protein hydrolysate, included as an excipient wetting agent. SDP-4 is produced from the natural silk cocoon and contributes to the smooth, hydrating feel of the drop. It does not serve an active role per the OTC monograph, but is included to support patient comfort.
Dextrose – A simple sugar that helps fine-tune osmolality for a more comfortable experience on instillation.
Magnesium Chloride – A mineral salt that helps balance pH and formulation stability.
Sodium Acetate – A buffering agent used to maintain consistent, eye-friendly pH over time.
May also contain trace amounts of hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide to adjust pH during manufacturing.
Minimal Ingredients. Maximal Intent.
SilkTears™ was created by clinicians, for patients who read the label. Our focus isn’t marketing fluff — it’s formulation integrity. Each ingredient serves a purpose. And none are included to do anything beyond what’s permitted in a compliant OTC product.
SilkTears™ is preservative-free, single-use, and manufactured in FDA-registered cGMP facilities in the USA
